Who needs to take the certification course?
  • All new motor vehicle salespeople applying for a salesperson licence. A licence will not be issued until a completed Salesperson Application 310 kB is submitted and all licensing requirements are met.
  • Returning salespeople who took the Salesperson Certification Course prior to September 2007

  • Anyone who wants to be a wholesaler or wholesaler representative and does not have a VSA Salesperson License can choose to take the full Salesperson Certification Course or the limited Wholesaler Certification Course.
What does the certification course cover?

The Salesperson Certification Course provides a foundation for professional and legal selling.  It explores the Motor Dealer Act, the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act, the Sale of Goods Act, contract law and related legislation. The course outlines the responsibilities of a sales professional through the entire selling process, from advertising to presenting vehicles, negotiating sales to documenting transactions.  The responsibilities and limitations of broker agents and broker agent representatives are covered, in addition to the requirements and restrictions of wholesale selling.

The Wholesaler Certification Course provides a foundation for professional and legal wholesaling activities. It explores the Motor Dealer Act, the Motor Vehicle Act, contract law and related legislation. The course outlines the requirements and restrictions of wholesale selling, from use of a wholesale sales agreement to record keeping and record retention, minimum vehicle requirements to required declarations and disclosures.

The course content is provided in four 90-minute, fully-interactive scheduled online review sessions.  Short, web-based self-study homework must be completed before each review session.  There is one session each day, Monday through Thursday.  The locally supervised licensing exam can be completed on Friday of the same week.

To be successful you need:

  • A computer (not a tablet or a cell phone)
  • Adobe Flash Player installed (on 99% of computers and free)
  • Computer speakers to hear videos and interviews
  • A high-speed data connection (cable modem, etc.)
  • A speaker phone or a hands-free headset (to call an 800 number)
  • A quiet, individual place to work, such as an office with a door
  • If working from home, undisturbed time at the computer
  • A modest level of competence with computers and typing
  • The ability to focus for up to 90 minutes without being disturbed

A helper for the online Orientation, the first homework assignment and the first review session is encouraged for those unsure of their computer skills.

Wholesaler Certification Course
Online Wholesaler Series

The course content is discussed in two 120-minute, fully-interactive scheduled online sessions. Short, web-based self-study homework should be completed before each session. The online sessions are held on two subsequent Fridays, from 9-11 am. The online exam is scheduled for the Monday after the second online session.

Certification course policies
  • Participants must attend and complete all course components to be eligible to write the exam
  • The final mark is based on all course work, homework, class participation and the exam
  • Participants must have an overall mark of 75% to pass
  • Government-issued picture ID is required in order to write the exam
Certification course cancellations or transfers

Salesperson Certification Course and Wholesaler Certification Course

Cancellations: All requests received at least TEN BUSINESS DAYS prior to the start of the class are subject to a fee of $50. Requests received without ten days’ notice will be issued a refund equal to 10% of the fee for every full business day prior to the start of class – less fee of $50. For example, if the VSA receives notice before the start of the fifth business day prior to the course date, a refund of 50% less $50 will be issued. Cancellation requests must be received in writing.

Transfers: Transfers are subject to a fee of $50. Only one transfer permitted per course registration.

No Shows: Failure to attend a session will result in a transfer to a future course; full course fees may apply.  Full course policies are available here:

Certification course marks

Salesperson Certification Course

  • Individual marks are emailed usually within 14 days of the end of the course
  • Participants who pass and have met all other licensing requirements will receive their full licence at their home address within 2 weeks of receiving their marks
  • Participants who fail will be notified by phone within 14 days of the end of the course to discuss available options

Wholesaler Certification Course

  • Individual marks are emailed usually within 1 week of the end of the course
  • Participants who fail will be notified by phone within 14 days of the end of the course to discuss available options
